Fundraising Mastermind

Background - Founded during the economic and healthcare crisis of 2020 (COVID-19), Fundraising mastermind is a professional development and networking group of executive-level philanthropic leaders within social justice organizations.

Purpose - We are committed to fostering professional development and networking opportunities for these philanthropic leaders, particularly in times of crisis and uncertainty.

What it is - A resource for participants to support one another in the ever-changing field of philanthropy. Members provide thoughtful feedback and advice and, in return, receive the same benefit. Some qualities of our participants include:

  • Drive and Commitment:  Everyone in the mastermind holds similar responsibilities and professional objectives.

  • Diversity of Skill Sets:  Members represent analytical and data-driven to creative and intuitive thinking strategies; different perspectives drive smarter, more informed decision making.

  • Problem Solving:  Shared life experiences and members' unique perspectives on the current landscape of philanthropy can inform best practices while providing feedback and new solutions.

We believe that we can change the world while elevating our nation's philanthropic culture, personal reputations, and the organizations we lead. Together we support:

  • Accountability: Members of the mastermind hold you to your task and contribute to the metrics that determine success.

  • Differing Viewpoints: Reading, reviewing, and exploring different perspectives from our fellow mastermind participants can lead to recognizing issues and possibilities not otherwise examined.

  • Resources: Everyone who participates in our mastermind brings varied skills and networks of people who might provide additional access to move objectives forward.

  • Shared Support: Our mastermind focuses on the specific topic of philanthropy; even with different overall objectives, our shared experiences empower learning and skill development.

What it is not - This mastermind is not for junior fundraisers. Not all organizations qualify for membership. Instead, this mastermind is for leaders focused on progressive movement-based social justice organizations, including reproductive justice, healthcare, homelessness, LGBTQ+, compassionate religion, criminal justice reform, environmental, hunger, child welfare, disability, military veteran, voting, and civil rights.

Mastermind Schedule and Guidelines:

  • Meetings are scheduled for 1 hour every other week (5 pm EST, 4 pm CST, 3 pm MST, 2 pm PST)

  • Groups are limited to 9 participants, and one moderator (10 in total).

  • We leave our egos at the door.

  • We are willing to accept constructive feedback.

  • We hold each other accountable.

  • We embrace competition, but with a foundation of support.

Three Question to Consider in Advance of your First Mastermind

  • What are you working to achieve? Each member can answer with whatever they feel comfortable sharing.

  • What have you learned? Very often, participants are focused on similar goals, and lessons learned by one member benefit all.

  • How can the group help? Our goal is to take the pressure off those who want support. You may not need help currently, but you'll know that you have a resource in this group.
